There’s nothing like a sun-kissed glow in mid-December. I recently traveled to the Riviera Maya with Funjet Vacations and stayed at the Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraíso, and I’m excited to share the highlights. Funjet Vacations, based in Milwaukee, offers all-inclusive packages around the world, and they invited me to join their Funjet Insiders program to showcase exceptional resorts and share how to travel Fit Foodie style. Last year’s spot was Jamaica; this year it was Mexico — thankfully I made it through this trip in one piece!
This was my first stay at an Iberostar property, and it surpassed my expectations. I’ve visited Mexico several times, and the Iberostar Grand stands out for its attentive service, varied dining, and thoughtful amenities. The staff greeted us by name — seriously, we passed team members on the walk to the beach who knew us as soon as they saw us. Special thanks to Santiago and the team for making our stay so memorable.

The Resort
The Iberostar Playa Paraíso complex includes five luxury resorts; we stayed at the Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraíso, the adults-only, most secluded option. The Grand is an all-inclusive, beachfront resort with elegant rooms and stunning ocean views. We booked a beachfront villa with a balcony and rain shower, and waking up to those sunrises was worth the trip alone.
Beyond the beach and pools, the resort offers multiple five-star amenities: four specialty restaurants, a buffet, five bars, and 24-hour room service. There’s an on-site spa and modern fitness facilities, and guests at the Grand can use the dining and amenities at the other four resorts on the property. That flexibility makes long strolls and spontaneous cocktail stops easy — and there’s a marked 3-mile running trail around the entire property for dedicated runners.
The grounds are beautifully maintained, and the combination of pools, tropical landscaping, and beachfront access creates a relaxing but active atmosphere. Staff members were consistently friendly and helpful, making the entire stay feel polished and welcoming.

Big shout out to the friend who patiently took hundreds of photos with me each day.
The Food
If you love food, the dining options here will not disappoint. The resort offers a wide selection of buffets and themed restaurants. The bars stock a broad range of liquors, and bartenders are happy to craft custom cocktails — my go-to was a mojito without sugar, bright and minty.
We sampled four of the main restaurants for dinner and visited the buffet for breakfast and lunch. The buffet offers an omelette station and a huge variety of breakfast and lunch choices — fresh fish, grilled options, raw vegetables, cheeses, and more. If you’re wary of buffets, a simple strategy helps: fill half your plate with vegetables, a quarter with protein, and the last quarter with a carbohydrate you enjoy — and don’t skip dessert.
The Grand’s specialty restaurants are reservation-only and themed. We enjoyed Italian, Mexican, French, and Japanese menus, and the staff’s recommendations helped pick authentic dishes. My favorites were the Mexican and Japanese restaurants for their flavor and presentation. Overall, the resort emphasized fresh fruit and vegetables and avoided over-salting dishes, which made meals even more enjoyable.
The Active and Fun Offerings
Active travel is my thing, and this resort balances activity with relaxation perfectly. I stayed busy with long beach walks, yoga, gym sessions, and spa time.
Long Beach Walks
Walking the shore is one of my favorite vacation activities. It’s a gentle way to stay active, explore the property, and enjoy the Riviera Maya coastline.

Spa
The spa and relaxation time were essential parts of the trip. The spa features an indoor pool, sauna, hot tub, and a juice bar. We had a relaxation massage that felt wonderfully restorative — the staff are warm and professional, and the spa experience is a highlight.

Yoga and Fitness
Fitness options are plentiful, from well-equipped gyms to group classes. I especially enjoyed a yoga flow on the beach. The Grand has a smaller gym steps from the rooms, while other properties on-site include larger fitness centers, group studios, and even CrossFit-style spaces. Seeing so many guests use the facilities made the fitness atmosphere lively and motivating.
I aim for at least a 30-minute workout every other day and to stay active through walking or swimming on the other days. During this stay, we completed two workouts and enjoyed the resort’s fitness offerings, including the Star Fit and Fun program.

My Outfits
Traveling to warm weather in the fall was a chance to mix summery pieces with transitional staples. I packed lightweight dresses, a romper, and versatile separates that worked for beach days and dinners.

Overall, the Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraíso delivered a balanced vacation: exceptional service, varied and fresh dining, excellent fitness and spa facilities, and beautiful beachfront grounds. Whether you want to relax by the pool, explore the beach, or keep up with fitness routines, this resort makes it easy to enjoy every part of your stay.
