What You Need for this Strawberry Basil Kombucha Mocktail
With just a handful of whole ingredients, this kombucha mocktail is quick to prepare and requires minimal skill. It’s a great option for anyone who wants a bright, flavorful non‑alcoholic drink that still feels special.
- Strawberries: Use ripe, juicy strawberries for the best flavor. Fresh is preferred, but frozen and thawed can work in a pinch.
- Orange juice: Adds brightness and a touch of acidity to balance the sweetness.
- Fresh basil leaves: The herb note of basil pairs wonderfully with strawberries—don’t skip it.
- Kombucha: About 12 oz of plain kombucha provides the fizz and probiotic character. You can also use a mild flavored kombucha if you prefer.
- Ice: Keeps the drink cold and refreshing—adjust to taste.
Additional tools needed
- Blender or food processor: For pureeing the strawberries into a smooth base.
- Muddler or wooden spoon: To gently bruise basil leaves and release their aroma.
- Glasses or mason jars: Choose clear glassware to show off the pretty color of the mocktail.
Variations and Substitutions
Swap the berries: If strawberries aren’t available, raspberries, blackberries, or even a mix of berries will work well. For convenience, a tablespoon or two of strawberry jam can stand in for fresh berries when needed.
Try different juices: Lemon or grapefruit juice can replace orange juice for a tarter profile. If you like sweeter drinks, a drizzle of honey, maple syrup, or agave will adjust sweetness without overpowering the fresh flavors.
Use flavored kombucha: While plain kombucha keeps the drink light, a ginger, lemon, or strawberry‑flavored kombucha can add another dimension of flavor—just be mindful of sweetness levels.
Extra bubbles: For a lighter, more delicate fizz, top each glass with a splash of sparkling water or club soda in addition to kombucha.
A Few Serving Tips
- Make a pitcher: Scale the recipe up to serve a crowd. Prepare the fruit puree and basil in advance, then combine with kombucha just before serving to preserve fizz.
- Garnishes: Fresh basil sprigs, thin strawberry slices, or a few whole berries make an attractive finishing touch.
- Boozy option: If you prefer an alcoholic version, a splash of vodka, gin, or light rum complements the flavors, but add alcohol sparingly to let the kombucha’s character shine.
Storage
Store any leftover mocktail in a sealed container or mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. If you’ve mixed the kombucha in, note that carbonation will naturally decrease over time, so it’s best enjoyed the same day for maximum fizz.
