I used to feel guilty and stressed about wanting an active lifestyle when my partner didn’t share the same priorities. Today, my partner and I value fitness similarly, and it’s made a huge difference in our relationship and daily life. Below I’ll share why having a like-minded partner when it comes to exercise matters so much, plus my thoughts on the new Nike Epic React running shoes I’ve been testing.

First things first:
GUYS, NIKE IS LAUNCHING NEW SHOES AND I HAD THE CHANCE TO TRY THEM FIRST.
Well, not literally the very first person, but I was among the early testers. My partner Mark is a huge shoe fan and was definitely jealous when my Nike Epic React package arrived. I’m partnering with Nike to talk about these new running shoes and to reflect on working out when your significant other shares—or doesn’t share—your fitness mindset.
Nike Epic React
To be candid: often great workout shoes sacrifice looks for function. The Nike Epic React bucks that trend. Nike invested years developing a new foam that aims to deliver softer, springier, and more durable cushioning, and the Epic React showcases that innovation. These shoes were scheduled to release on Nike.com on February 22, and I had the chance to wear them before they hit wider retail.
I’ve been running and cross-training in them all week and have appreciated how they perform in a variety of workouts.
Why I Like Them
- Comfortable: They provide a plush feel underfoot during both runs and strength sessions.
- Lightweight: They’re easy to move in while still offering necessary support.
- Secure fit: Since I previously had a foot injury, a snug fit gives me extra confidence in my footing.
- Springy cushioning: The sole has noticeable bounce and responsiveness, which makes running feel livelier.
I wear a size 9, and they fit true to size. I’m especially fond of the navy color—less likely to show dirt than white, and a fresh change for me. Below I list the pieces I wore during these photos and workouts for anyone curious about the look.
What I’m Wearing

Working Out with Your Significant Other: Why It Matters
Although I used to tell myself that having different exercise habits wasn’t a big deal, my experience proved otherwise. I once dated someone who preferred low-activity vacations and social routines that didn’t include fitness. I love multi-day hikes and active adventures, so the mismatch in priorities created friction. Opposites may attract, but similar life values—especially around health and activity—make daily life smoother and more fulfilling.
Now I’m with Mark, who understands how important fitness is to me. He recognizes the role exercise plays in health and in our quality of life. That alignment has transformed my experience: I don’t feel like I’m pushing to fit workouts into our schedule or compromising my preferences. Instead, we choose active options naturally—bouldering, lakeside walks, or runs during travel—so staying active feels like a shared lifestyle instead of an individual chore.
When I say “fitness,” I mean more than gym sessions or formal runs. It includes everyday choices: walking after work instead of automatically sitting on the couch, canoeing on a sunny afternoon rather than defaulting to indoor plans, or opting to walk or bike to a brewery and savoring the outing. Those small decisions add up to an active life. I’d rather bike to a brewery and enjoy a beer knowing I earned the experience, than drive there and back without movement. Mark is usually the first to suggest an outdoor plan, and that mutual enthusiasm makes me genuinely happy.
Having similar viewpoints on recovery and rest is also invaluable. In the past I struggled with an unhealthy, obsessive relationship with exercise; now, being with a partner who listens to his body and practices intuitive eating and training helps me model balance. His approach to rest and mindful movement has aided my own progress toward a healthier, more intuitive routine.
And yes—here’s a lighthearted detail: Mark and I have a little handshake we do when we finish a workout together. It’s corny but sweet, and it’s one of those tiny rituals that strengthens our connection.
