Best Fall Smoothie Award

If you love smoothies, this apple smoothie deserves a spot in your autumn lineup. Made without banana, it relies on frozen applesauce as the cooling element instead of ice or frozen banana, which gives it a smooth, naturally apple-forward flavor. Combined with cinnamon, a touch of maple syrup, flaxseed and nut butter, the result mirrors the cozy flavors of apple pie in smoothie form.

This recipe is versatile enough for any time of day: drink it on-the-go, enjoy it as a post-workout treat, or serve it in a bowl with toppings for a more leisurely breakfast. Using applesauce as the frozen base shortens prep time and prevents the strong taste bananas can sometimes add, making the apple and spice notes shine.

Frozen Applesauce

Frozen applesauce is the star of this smoothie. Freeze store-bought applesauce cups or freeze portions of homemade applesauce in an ice cube tray. The frozen applesauce creates a thick, chilled smoothie without diluting flavor like plain ice can. It also stores well in the freezer: once frozen, transfer the applesauce cubes into a freezer-safe bag or container so you’ll always have smoothie-ready portions on hand.

So Many Uses for Frozen Applesauce

Beyond smoothies, frozen applesauce cubes are handy as portable coolers for lunches, as a quick snack once thawed, or stirred into oatmeal and yogurt for extra fruit flavor. Freezing applesauce is an economical way to preserve excess apples from the season and reduce waste.

Other Ingredients

The remaining ingredients are simple and nutritious. Each contributes texture, flavor, or nourishment:

  • Flax: Ground flaxseed adds omega-3s, fiber and a subtle nutty flavor.
  • Nut Butter: Choose almond or cashew butter for a milder taste, or peanut butter if you prefer a bolder profile. Nut butter contributes protein and healthy fats to keep you satisfied.
  • Rolled Oats: Oats introduce whole-grain carbohydrates and help thicken the smoothie for a more substantial mouthfeel. Use rolled or quick-cooking oats depending on your blender power and texture preference.
  • Maple Syrup: Optional but highly recommended—just a teaspoon enhances the warm fall spices and balances tartness.
  • Cinnamon: A small pinch transforms this drink, evoking apple pie. You can also try pumpkin pie spice for extra warmth.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz. applesauce, frozen*
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or any milk)
  • 2 tablespoons rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons nut butter (any kind)
  • 1 teaspoon ground flax seed
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Freeze two 4-oz. applesauce cups for at least 2 hours or overnight so they become solid.
  2. To remove the frozen applesauce from the plastic, briefly run the cups under warm water and gently pop them out. Place the frozen applesauce into a high-speed blender.
  3. Add almond milk, rolled oats, nut butter, ground flaxseed, maple syrup and cinnamon.
  4. Blend on high for about one minute, or until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy. If the smoothie is too thick, add a splash more milk and blend again. If you prefer it thicker, add a couple more frozen applesauce cubes.
  5. Pour into a glass or smoothie bowl and top with granola, apple slices, a drizzle of nut butter and an extra pinch of cinnamon if desired.

Tips & Notes

  • Freezing applesauce: If using homemade applesauce, freeze it in an ice cube tray for easy portioning. Once frozen, store the cubes in a freezer-safe bag or container so they’re ready for smoothies, snacks or to chill a lunchbox.
  • Nut-free option: Use sunflower seed butter in place of nut butter for a nut-free alternative.
  • Sweetness: Adjust the maple syrup to taste, or omit entirely if your applesauce is already sweetened.
