Horchata White Russian

A cozy, creamy twist on the classic White Russian: instead of plain cream, this version uses frothy horchata combined with heavy cream and a warm cinnamon spice syrup. Vodka and coffee liqueur form the base, while a cinnamon-sugar rim and a cinnamon stick garnish add aromatic depth. The result is dessert in a glass—smooth, balanced, and perfect for sipping slowly.

Equipment

  • Old-fashioned glass or similar short glass
  • Milk frother or small handheld whisk (for frothing the horchata and cream)
  • Jigger or measuring spoon
  • Bar spoon or long spoon for stirring

Ingredients

For the Cocktail:

  • 1½
    oz
    vodka
  • 1½
    oz
    coffee liqueur
  • 1½
    oz
    store-bought horchata, well shaken
  • 1
    oz
    heavy cream

For the Cinnamon Spice Syrup:

  • 2
    tbsp
    piloncillo or brown sugar
  • 2
    tbsp
    warm water
  • ¼
    tsp
    ground cinnamon
  • Pinch
    of nutmeg

For the Rim and Garnish:

  • Honey, for rimming
  • 2
    tbsp
granulated sugar mixed with ½ tsp ground cinnamon, for the rim
  • Cinnamon stick, for garnish

Instructions

  • Make the cinnamon spice syrup first. In a small bowl, dissolve the piloncillo or brown sugar in the warm water. Stir in the ground cinnamon and a small pinch of nutmeg until fully combined and smooth. Taste and adjust sweetness or spice to your preference. Set the syrup aside so the flavors can meld while you prepare the rest.
  • Prepare the glass. Lightly dip the rim of your glass into a thin layer of honey, then press the rim into the cinnamon-sugar mixture until it is evenly coated. This creates a fragrant, textured rim that complements the drink. Fill the glass generously with ice.
  • Build the cocktail. Pour the vodka, coffee liqueur, and a measure of the cinnamon spice syrup over the ice. Use a bar spoon to give the mixture a quick stir, just enough to blend the spirits and syrup while keeping the glass chilled.
  • Froth the horchata and cream. In a small cup or bowl, combine the well-shaken horchata with the heavy cream. Use a milk frother or a handheld whisk to froth the mixture until it becomes light and airy. Aim for a creamy, slightly thickened foam that will sit on top of the cocktail when poured.
  • Layer the froth. Pour the frothed horchata and cream slowly over the back of a spoon or in one steady pour so it floats on top of the cocktail. The contrast between the dark base and the pale froth looks beautiful and makes for a richer sip.
  • Garnish and serve. Finish with a cinnamon stick tucked into the glass and serve immediately. For the best experience, give the drink a gentle stir right before drinking so the layers combine into a smooth, integrated sip.

Notes

  • Shake the horchata well before measuring. Rice and cinnamon particles tend to settle at the bottom of store-bought horchata; using a shaken bottle ensures full flavor and a creamier texture.
  • The cinnamon spice syrup is the key to this variation. While many horchatas are sweet on their own, the piloncillo (or brown sugar), cinnamon, and nutmeg add warm, layered flavor that makes the drink taste homemade and more complex.
  • Frothing the horchata with the cream creates a thick, velvety layer that sits on top of the cocktail. This gives each sip a smooth mouthfeel and helps marry the coffee, spirit, and spice elements.
  • If you don’t have piloncillo, use dark brown sugar for a similar molasses note. Adjust the syrup sweetness to taste—start with the listed amounts and add more if you prefer a sweeter cocktail.
  • For a lighter version, substitute half-and-half for heavy cream and froth the mixture; the layer will be lighter but still creamy. Conversely, for an extra-luxurious finish, use a higher ratio of heavy cream.
  • Storage: The cinnamon spice syrup can be made ahead and refrigerated in a sealed container for up to one week. Reheat briefly or bring to room temperature before using so it blends easily with the spirits.
  • Serving tip: Present the drink with the cinnamon-sugar rim and a cinnamon stick for aroma. Instruct guests to stir gently before sipping to combine the layers for the best flavor experience.
