Bright Master Bedroom Tour and VELUX Skylights Giveaway

I titled this post “My Bright & Airy Master Bedroom” for good reason: after installing skylights, so much natural light pours into the space that it completely changed how the room feels. Read through for details on the skylights, the VELUX ACTIVE climate system, the sun tunnel we added to the bathroom, decorating notes for the room, and an opportunity to enter a VELUX skylight giveaway.

Just over a year ago I shared an empty home tour when we first bought the house. Surrounded by tree canopy, this house felt dark inside before we added skylights. To bring in daylight we installed VELUX skylights, and they’ve made a massive difference in both the bedroom and the bathroom.

VELUX Skylights

Adding skylights to the master suite is easily the best change we’ve made to the house. Natural light transforms a space—improving mood, highlighting design details, and, yes, making photos and selfies look better. We chose two No Leak Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights for the bedroom. These venting skylights open with a button or app, and we added blackout blinds so the room can be fully dark when we want it to be.

Skylight Features

VELUX skylights offer several benefits that make them an excellent choice for any home:

  • They bring daylight into rooms that receive little natural light. Because these are venting skylights, you can open them for fresh air and close removable screens to keep insects out.
  • They are solar-powered and require no wiring. The panels keep charging even on cloudy days, and solar-powered units may qualify for a federal tax credit.
  • Both the skylights and the blinds operate via remote control or the VELUX ACTIVE app, so you can control light and ventilation from your phone.
  • Built-in rain sensors close the skylights automatically at the first sign of rain, which provides real peace of mind.
  • VELUX markets these as “No Leak” skylights and backs the product and installation with a warranty.
  • Professional installation is quick and straightforward: a certified installer completed our bedroom and kitchen skylight installations in a matter of days.

Sun Tunnels

In the bathroom we added a Sun Tunnel skylight. The bathroom previously had no window, and applying makeup or getting ready under artificial light was difficult. The Sun Tunnel floods the space with natural light so we rarely turn on the lights anymore. Sun Tunnels are also very cost-effective—our 10-inch model was inexpensive compared to standard flat-glass skylights and installation is typically much faster.

VELUX ACTIVE System

I particularly appreciate the VELUX ACTIVE with NETATMO system. It monitors indoor temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels, then automatically opens or closes skylights and blinds to improve indoor air quality and comfort. The automation is great, but I also like the option to manually control everything from my phone. The system integrates safety features such as automatic closure when rain is detected.

Cost and Installation Overview

Costs vary by skylight type, size, and region. To give a general idea:

  • Skylight product cost: Larger skylights and flat-glass models are pricier than sun tunnels. For reference, the two bedroom skylights with blinds were just over $3,000, while our Sun Tunnel cost about $271 for the unit.
  • Labor: Professional installation is recommended. Installers typically charge more to install flat skylights than Sun Tunnels because they require more work; an experienced installer can complete a Sun Tunnel in roughly 90 minutes, while a standard skylight installation often costs around $1,500 per skylight depending on complexity.

Note: Many solar-powered skylight products may be eligible for a federal tax credit. Check current regulations for eligibility and details.

Bright & Airy Modern Master Bedroom

Beyond the skylights, I designed the bedroom to feel light, calm, and modern. I leaned into white walls and trim (Pure White by Sherwin-Williams) with pops of color in textiles and art. The goal was a tranquil, airy space that feels both modern and cozy.

Furniture

Quality furniture makes a difference. While it can be more costly, I buy pieces on sale or when they’re discounted. Our dressers and nightstands come from a modern collection with mid-century touches—clean lines, light walnut legs, and adaptable styles that let me swap hardware or finishes over time.

Bed and Bedding

We chose a modular approach for the bed: a separate base and headboard so each can be changed independently. Our mattress is a king-size adjustable bed that lets us control firmness. I favor white duvets and textured linens for a clean, layered look, and I rotate sheet colors seasonally for variety.

Decor

Small touches bring the room to life: square mirrors above the dresser, colorful prints in simple frames, a low-profile fabric-covered flushmount light, and a sale-find table lamp. Removing glass from certain frames eliminates glare and keeps the focus on the artwork.

Plants & Pots

Plants are essential for warmth and texture. The skylights have made it easy to keep low-maintenance plants thriving—pothos, a mother-in-law’s tongue, and a cactus for the bathroom. I display plants in simple pots and woven baskets to add natural texture and height to corners and surfaces.
