Starbucks Protein Cold Foam: Ingredients and How to Order

When Starbucks introduced their protein beverages, I set out to recreate the protein cold foam I love at home. This copycat protein cold foam delivers the same creamy, frothy texture and rich flavor you expect from a coffee shop, but with only three main ingredients and about five minutes of prep time. It adds roughly 22 grams of protein per serving, making it a satisfying way to boost your drink. Use it to top iced coffee, cold brew, or espresso-based iced beverages.

Why I Love This Recipe

  • It tastes like the Starbucks protein cold foam you know, but you can make it at home in under five minutes.
  • You can prepare it with either vanilla or chocolate whey protein powder for two distinct flavor options.
  • Each serving supplies about 22 grams of protein, so it’s a great way to add protein to your coffee without sacrificing texture.

Ingredients You Need

  • Whey protein powder: This recipe is designed for whey-based protein powder only. Whey produces a smooth, airy foam; plant-based powders tend to make a dense, grainy texture and are not recommended.
  • Heavy cream: A small amount of heavy cream helps the mixture whip into a stable, silky foam rather than just a thin, protein-fortified milk.
  • 2% milk (such as Fairlife): Adding a little 2% milk prevents the cream from turning into whipped cream and keeps the texture closer to a pourable cold foam. The Fairlife 2% used in testing offers higher protein per cup than traditional milk, but any 2% milk will work.
  • Coffee: Serve the foam over cold brew, iced coffee, or an iced espresso drink—cold brew pairs particularly well.

Top Tips for a Copycat Starbucks Protein Cold Foam

Use whey protein only. Whey creates the smooth, light foam you want. Plant-based protein powders were tested and resulted in a thick, gritty texture that does not foam properly.

Choose vanilla or chocolate. Both vanilla and chocolate whey powders produce excellent results — choose the flavor that best complements your coffee.

Serve immediately. This protein cold foam is best when freshly whipped. Over time it will lose volume and turn into a thicker protein milk. If you must store leftovers, keep them chilled and re-froth briefly before using.

Equipment: A handheld milk frother or a hand mixer works best to quickly whip the ingredients to a light, airy foam. A blender can work in a pinch but may over-aerate if left running too long.

A glass of iced coffee topped with whipped chocolate foam, with the foam being poured over the ice. Denim fabric is visible in the background.

Ingredients

  • 2 scoops whey protein powder, vanilla or chocolate (about 4 tablespoons)
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons 2% milk (Fairlife recommended for extra protein)
  • 1 cup cold brew coffee, or coffee drink of your choice

Instructions

  1. Combine the whey protein powder, heavy cream, and 2% milk in a tall glass or small bowl. Use a wide container so the mixture has room to expand as it foams.
  2. Froth the mixture with a handheld milk frother or whip with a hand mixer until it becomes thick, creamy, and airy. This usually takes 20–60 seconds depending on your tool.
  3. Fill a serving glass with ice and pour in cold brew or your preferred chilled coffee. Spoon or pour the protein cold foam over the top.
  4. Serve immediately and enjoy. Stir gently if you prefer a lighter swirl of foam into your drink.

Tips & Notes

  • Stick with whey-based protein powder for best texture; plant-based powders were found to be grainy and dense.
  • The foam holds best when served right away; it will gradually lose volume and become thicker if stored. If you do refrigerate leftovers, re-froth briefly before serving.
  • If you like a sweeter foam, choose a flavored whey protein or add a small pinch of sweetener to the mixture before frothing.
