What I’m Loving Right Now: Minnesota Edition

Happy Wednesday, friends! We left very early this morning for the north — my sister, her son, Man Candy, and I are heading into the Boundary Waters for a long, off-the-grid weekend. If you’re unfamiliar, BWCA stands for Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness: miles of lakes, portages, and classic Minnesota canoe country. Tonight we’re staying in Grand Marais, MN at a charming Bed & Breakfast, the MacArthur House B&B. Coincidentally, Linley and a few friends are also in the area this weekend, so we’ll probably meet up for drinks before hitting the BWCA. On Friday morning we’ll put in at Tuscarora and start our portaging trip. I’ll share a full recap and photos when we get back.

I’m also excited to continue my “Things I’m Loving Lately” series. This edition celebrates Minnesota-made style and small businesses I love. Though I grew up in Wisconsin, Minnesota has been home since 2008, and I’ve come to appreciate how much Minnesotans support local makers. The Twin Cities have a lively entrepreneur community, and I focused this post on apparel and accessories — things you actually wear every day. Here are some of my current favorite Minnesota brands.

MSP Clothing

MSP Clothing specializes in playful, locally inspired tees and tanks that celebrate Minnesota pride. Everything is designed in St. Paul and printed in Minneapolis, which feels great for anyone who cares about local production. Their designs are clean, comfortable, and perfect for everyday wear whether you’re exploring the city or heading out to the lakes.

Sota Clothing

Sota Clothing is a Twin Cities favorite with a strong local vibe. I’ve watched this brand grow over the years — you’ll spot Sota designs around town at coffee shops, events, and on people out and about. The brand captures a casual, outdoorsy aesthetic that fits Minnesota living, and they have fun seasonal items like hoodies and tanks that make great gifts. One memorable project was converting an old camper into a Sota Clothing Truck, a creative way to bring the brand to events around the region.

Paisley and Sparrow

Paisley and Sparrow is a brand I love both for its style and its mission. The founder, Jen, curates jewelry and accessories from ethical sources and organizations that support marginalized communities. The pieces are beautiful and thoughtfully made, so each item feels meaningful as well as lovely to wear. Lin and I are personal friends with Jen, and we often meet to talk about life and business — which makes supporting her brand even more special.

Minnetonka

Minnetonka moccasins are a longtime favorite of mine. I’ve owned several of their classic styles — moccs, boots, slippers — and appreciate the comfort and timeless design. It’s also great that the company is based nearby in Northeast Minneapolis, which feels true to the local heritage. Right now I’m especially into the Kilty Hard Sole, available in several versatile colors.

If you’re from Minnesota, I’d love to hear about your favorite local brands. Or if you already own any of these pieces, tell me what you love about them!
