Breasts and Bras Survey: Share Your Experience

A title that draws you in — this topic has been on my mind since high school. I remember feeling self-conscious about being a late bloomer; I didn’t get my period until I was 16, and my chest developed later than many of my friends. At the time, I wished for a fuller figure, but being an athlete taught me that larger breasts can be a challenge in sports. If you’re wondering why I’m discussing this on a food and fitness blog: women’s bodies affect how we train, what we wear, and how confident we feel, so it’s relevant.

Fast forward to college and a difficult period in my life when I struggled with disordered eating. Over one summer I dropped from my heaviest weight to a much lower weight in a short time through extreme calorie restriction and excessive exercise. That change reduced my cup size and made some clothing fit better, but it was unhealthy in every other way. I lost my menstrual cycle and felt miserable despite the smaller size. After I recovered and returned to a healthier weight, my body rebuilt differently — I gained back muscle and overall mass, and my bust increased as well.

Today I weigh roughly what I did before that phase, but with more muscle and less body fat overall — except my breasts, which ended up larger than before. I’m now a 34 around with a DD cup, which presents a difficult fit: bands and cups often don’t align well across brands. If I shop by cup size, bands feel too loose; if I choose a tighter band, the cup becomes too small. That mismatch makes bra shopping frustrating, and it’s why I mostly wear sports bras unless a specific event requires something different.

I wanted to write about this for a long time but felt nervous doing it alone, so I asked the team to join me. We photographed and talked candidly about our bodies, our favorite workout bras, and what works for different shapes and activities. This post highlights recommended sports bras for various sizes and body types, with honest opinions from people who wear them daily. These are our real favorites — no sponsorships here, just what we actually use.

Boobs and bras - sports bras we recommend for all sizes!

Lee’s Favorite – Energy Bra — Lululemon

5’8″ – 34DD – athletic build, full bust

The Energy Bra has been a game changer for larger-busted athletes. At its price point, it delivers strong coverage, a supportive band, and straps that stay in place during vigorous movement. For those with a full bust, the fit often requires sizing up in the bra itself for comfort; Lee wears a larger size in this style than her typical tops. The racerback design offers good support for high-impact workouts, and the cup coverage keeps everything secure and discreet. Some people prefer to remove the included foam cups for a more natural shape — Lee does this to reduce extra bulk.

Linley’s Favorite – Energy Bra — Lululemon

5’3″ – 32C – petite frame, full shape

For a petite athlete with a 32C, the right sports bra needs to balance a snug band with enough support to reduce bounce. Before discovering supportive options, Linley often layered multiple bras for runs. The Energy Bra delivers firm support without excess compression, so it’s comfortable for daily wear and more intense activity alike. It’s breathable, non-restrictive, and reliable during long workouts — exactly what someone with an active lifestyle needs.

Emily’s Favorite – Free To Be and Free To Be (Wild) Bras — Lululemon

5’8″ – 32B – slim build, moderate support needs

For smaller-busted athletes, versatility and comfort are key. The Free To Be and Free To Be (Wild) bras offer minimal restriction while providing enough support for yoga, low- to moderate-impact cardio, and everyday wear. The strappy designs double as a fashionable layer under tanks or off-shoulder tops, making them useful both in and out of the studio. When you find a bra that fits well and feels comfortable, it becomes a staple — Emily owns several colors and wears them often for workouts and casual outfits.
