One of the best things about a crockpot (slow cooker) is that it’s useful all year round. This updated version of our 2013 recipe keeps the same great flavor but with a few tweaks and refreshed photos. The method is straightforward: build the sauce, add chicken and aromatics to the slow cooker, cook until tender, shred, thicken the sauce, and finish with sesame seeds.

Ingredients
- 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breast
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/4 cup soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
- 1/4 cup organic ketchup
- 2 teaspoons minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon sriracha (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 medium onion, minced
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds

Prep: 10 mins Cook: 2 hrs (on high) Total: 2 hrs 10 mins Servings: 4

Ingredients
- 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breast
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/4 cup soy sauce or tamari
- 1/4 cup organic ketchup
- 2 teaspoons minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon sriracha (optional)
- 1/2 medium onion, minced
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
Instructions
- In a small bowl, whisk together the honey, soy sauce (or tamari), ketchup, minced garlic, and sriracha until smooth.
- Place the chicken breasts and minced onion in a large crockpot. Pour the sauce evenly over the chicken.
- Cover and cook on high for 1.5–2 hours, or on low for 6–8 hours. Check at 1.5 hours when cooking on high to ensure the chicken is cooked through (no pink in the center).
- When the chicken is fully cooked, remove the breasts and shred them with two forks.
- Whisk the cornstarch into the sauce in the crockpot until dissolved to help thicken. Return the shredded chicken to the pot, stir in the sesame seeds, and cook an additional 30 minutes on high to allow the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
- Serve over rice or your preferred grain with a side of steamed or roasted vegetables and a sprinkle of additional sesame seeds if desired.
Tips & Notes
- Nutrition values do not include rice or vegetables; they are an approximation.
- For a gluten-free version, use tamari instead of soy sauce and verify that your ketchup is gluten-free.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, dissolve an extra 1/2 teaspoon of cornstarch in a small amount of cold water and stir in during the final 10–15 minutes of cooking.
- Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for 3–4 days and can be reheated gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
