Brazilian Lemonade

Brazilian Lemonade is a refreshingly creamy, slightly tangy drink made with whole limes, cold water, sugar, and sweetened condensed milk. Despite its name, this beverage uses limes rather than lemons, giving it a bright, tropical flavor and a delightful creamy finish.

It’s blended briefly to extract juice and fragrance from the peel without bringing out bitterness, then strained and served chilled over ice. The result is a smooth, vibrant drink that’s perfect for warm afternoons, summer gatherings, or whenever you want an easy, crowd-pleasing refreshment.

Equipment

  • Blender
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Pitcher or serving container
  • Glasses and ice

Ingredients

  • 4
limes, preferably thin-skinned; each cut into 8 wedges
  • 4
    cups
    cold water
  • 1/2–3/4
    cup
    sugar, adjust to taste
  • 1/2
    cup
    sweetened condensed milk
  • Ice cubes, for serving

Instructions

  • Wash the limes thoroughly to remove any wax or dirt. Trim the ends and cut each lime into eight wedges. Leaving the peel on contributes flavor and aroma, but the wedges should be clean.
  • Place the lime wedges in a blender with the cold water, sugar, and sweetened condensed milk. Pulse the blender just long enough—about 5–6 seconds—until the limes are coarsely chopped. Short blending extracts the oils and juice while minimizing bitterness from the pith and peel.
  • Pour the blended mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a large pitcher. Use the back of a spoon to press the pulp and squeeze out as much liquid as possible. Discard the remaining pulp and solids.
  • Taste and adjust sweetness to your preference, adding a little more sugar if the limes are particularly tart. If the drink is too concentrated, add a splash more cold water and stir to combine.
  • Serve immediately over glasses filled with ice. Stir gently before pouring to ensure the condensed milk is evenly distributed and the texture is smooth.
  • Enjoy the Brazilian Lemonade while it’s fresh and chilled.

Notes & Tips

  • Only blend for about 5–6 seconds. Over-blending breaks down the white pith and can release bitter compounds that will spoil the smooth flavor.
  • Choose thin-skinned limes whenever possible. They have less pith and a higher ratio of juice and fragrant oils in the peel, which improves both taste and aroma.
  • Adjust the sugar to taste. Start with 1/2 cup and add up to 3/4 cup if your limes are very tart. Natural sweetness from the condensed milk also balances the acidity.
  • Serve immediately for the best flavor and texture. The drink tastes freshest within a few hours; if it sits too long, it may develop slight bitterness.
  • For a tropical variation, stir in a small splash of coconut milk or light coconut cream. For an adult version, a shot of white rum pairs nicely with the creamy citrus.
  • To make ahead: prepare and strain the mixture, then keep it chilled in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Stir well before serving and add ice at the last moment.
  • If you prefer a lighter texture, dilute with additional cold water to taste. For a creamier result, add an extra tablespoon of condensed milk per serving.
  • When straining, press gently—vigorous squeezing can force tiny bitter particles through the sieve. Use a fine mesh strainer or double-strain through cheesecloth for the clearest result.

This simple, flavorful drink is ideal for summer parties, BBQs, or a cooling treat any time you want something bright and slightly indulgent. The combination of whole limes and sweetened condensed milk creates a unique balance of tartness and creaminess that’s unmistakably Brazilian in style.
