Crispy Air Fryer Fish Fillets

Hello from a pair of Midwest food lovers who grew up on Friday night fish fry. This easy air fryer fish recipe delivers crispy, golden-brown white fish (we used cod) without deep frying. It’s healthier than traditional frying, cooks fast, and is simple to clean up—perfect for weeknight dinners and family meals.

This recipe produces tender, flaky fish inside and a crunchy coating outside in under 15 minutes of cook time. The technique is straightforward: dredge filets in egg, press them into a spiced breadcrumb mixture, then air fry until golden. Because the air fryer circulates hot air, you get a wonderfully crisp crust with minimal oil.

What You Need to Make Air Fryer Fish

  • Cod: fresh or thawed frozen cod filets work well; other white fish are fine too.
  • Eggs: act as a binder so the breadcrumbs adhere.
  • Bread crumbs: plain or panko for extra crunch; gluten-free options work as well.
  • All-purpose flour: helps create a crisp exterior.
  • Old Bay seasoning: or a seafood seasoning of your choice for flavor.
  • Salt: kosher or sea salt to taste.
  • Olive oil: a light drizzle keeps the crust golden and prevents sticking.

What kinds of fish can you air fry?

This method works with most firm, white fish. Adjust cook time based on thickness so the fish reaches a flaky, opaque center.

  • Tilapia
  • Whitefish
  • Haddock
  • Walleye

Can you make this recipe gluten free?

Yes. Swap regular breadcrumbs for gluten-free breadcrumbs and use a gluten-free all-purpose flour in place of standard flour. The result will be just as crisp with the right ingredients.

Top Tips for this Easy Air Fryer Fish Recipe

  • Cut fish into uniform pieces: similar sizes ensure even cooking across all filets.
  • Experiment with seasonings: if you don’t have Old Bay, try smoked paprika, garlic powder, or mixed herbs.
  • Don’t overcrowd the basket: leave space between pieces so hot air circulates and crisps all sides.
  • Oil the fish lightly: brushing or drizzling oil on the breaded fish before air frying helps achieve a golden crust; add a touch more if sections look dry after cooking.

The Best Way to Store Leftover Air Fryer Fish

Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3–4 days. To restore the crisp texture, reheat in the air fryer for 3–4 minutes rather than using the microwave, which can make the coating soggy. Watch closely to avoid overcooking.

Easy Air Fryer Fish

Our crispy air fryer fish is inspired by classic Midwest fish fry flavors but uses an air fryer to eliminate deep frying. This version cooks quickly and delivers a satisfying crunch.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. fresh or frozen cod, thawed if frozen (~2 filets)
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¾ cup plain bread crumbs (or panko)
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)
  • 1 tablespoon Old Bay seasoning (or preferred seafood seasoning)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 400ºF (200ºC). If your cod is frozen, fully thaw and pat dry.
  2. Pat the cod dry with paper towels and cut into 3–4 uniform strips that will fit comfortably in your air fryer basket.
  3. Whisk the eggs in a shallow bowl. In a separate bowl, mix bread crumbs, flour, Old Bay seasoning, and salt until evenly combined.
  4. Dredge each fish piece through the egg, allowing excess to drip off, then press into the breadcrumb mixture. For a sturdier crust, repeat the egg and breadcrumb steps a second time so each piece is coated twice.
  5. Brush or lightly coat the air fryer basket with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Place the breaded fish in a single layer, leaving space between pieces. Drizzle the remaining oil over the fish pieces for extra browning.
  6. Air fry for 8 minutes, then carefully flip each piece. Continue cooking for another 4 minutes or until the coating is golden brown and the fish flakes easily with a fork.
  7. Remove, serve immediately with tartar sauce and lemon wedges, and enjoy.

Tips & Notes

  • Any firm white fish can replace cod—adjust time for thickness.
  • Panko breadcrumbs provide extra crunch but regular crumbs work well.
  • Light oil on the breaded fish helps the coating brown; add a touch more if parts look dry after cooking.
  • Use oils with a high smoke point if preferred (for example, avocado or light vegetable oil).
