My First Day at Anytime Fitness: New Job, Goals, and Work-Life Balance

Guess what I did today? I woke up at 6:00 AM, ate a large bowl of overnight oats, and headed straight to the gym. After a shower I dressed up, slipped into flats, and got ready for a big day.

Because today was my first day at Anytime Fitness as an Online Communications and Social Media Specialist. I have been looking forward to this moment since I accepted the offer back in March. It feels surreal to reflect on how my relationship with Anytime Fitness began and evolved over the past year.

How it all started

  • In March 2011 I began contributing to AnytimeHealth.com as a blogger.
  • My first post for the AnytimeHealth blog was titled “The Power of a Balanced Life.”
  • In October 2011 I attended the Anytime Fitness Conference in Washington, DC and won an inspiring award on behalf of my blog Fit Foodie Finds.
  • In January 2012 I started a semester-long internship with Anytime Fitness, which gave me hands-on experience in online health communication.
  • In March 2012 I accepted a full-time position as an Online Health Communication and Social Media Specialist with Anytime Fitness.

It still amazes me that a simple tweet about oatmeal helped spark a career opportunity. The power of social media is real — a small, authentic moment can lead to meaningful connections and new chapters in life.

Reviewing my 2012 goals

Back in January I set a list of personal and professional goals for the year. Now that I’m starting this new chapter, here’s an honest check-in on how I’m doing.

  1. Graduate. This was always a priority. My graduation day was May 13, 2012, and I completed my degree. That milestone reopened possibilities and marked the start of a new stage.
  2. Find a full-time job. I had a company in mind whose mission aligned with mine: helping people become healthier. Today I began that role at Anytime Fitness — my first “real” job after graduation.
  3. Find a safe, comfortable home after graduation. I found a new place that feels like home and offers the stability I wanted for this next phase.
  4. Start a small business. This is still a work in progress. I have ideas and dreams I plan to explore over time, balancing them with my full-time role.
  5. Be active every day. I committed to moving daily and carving out time for walks and workouts. Progress has been strong, and I also earned my Yoga Sculpt certification, which was a meaningful achievement.
  6. Build meaningful relationships. I prioritized deep connections with friends and family, and I’m grateful for the supportive people in my life.
  7. Get a dog. While I still want a dog someday, now is not the right time given work and housing considerations.
  8. Run a marathon or triathlon. I’ve always hesitated at the idea of 26.2 miles, but I still consider this an aspirational goal and am working toward increased endurance and confidence.
  9. Never forget family. No matter where life takes us, my family remains essential. I’m committed to staying close and grateful for their support.
  10. Keep learning. I want continuous growth — personally and professionally. So far, this year has been full of learning opportunities.

Additional priorities

  • Work-life balance: I get stressed easily, so I’m intentionally setting boundaries to protect my time and energy. “Me time” is essential to sustain creativity and wellbeing.
  • Budgeting: I’m focused on saving and spending thoughtfully to support long-term stability.
  • Minimalism: I’m trying to live simply and only buy what I truly need, which complements the budgeting goal and helps reduce clutter.

Small celebrations

When I got home from my first day, two packages awaited me as a small, unexpected celebration: one from Chobani and another from Gold n’ Plump Chicken. Little surprises like that made the day feel even more special.

Reflections and questions for you

Starting this job has me excited and reflective. The path from blogging and interning to a full-time role in online communications has taught me the value of persistence, authentic voice, and building genuine connections.

What was your first real job? Do you have any work-life balance advice or routines that help you stay centered while advancing your career? I’d love to hear practical tips and personal experiences.
