-
Cocktail shaker
-
Cocktail muddler
-
Glasses (preferably short rocks or coupe)
-
Jigger
-
Cocktail strainer (and optional fine mesh sieve)
Ingredients
-
1
cup
fresh watermelon, cubed (seedless if possible) -
2½ – 3
oz
tequila blanco -
1
oz
triple sec, or Cointreau -
1½
oz
fresh lime juice -
1
oz
agave syrup, or simple syrup, adjust to taste - Ice
For the rim:
- Lime, honey, agave, chamoy, or reserved chamoy rim dip
- Tajín or salt
Instructions
-
Prepare the rim first: pour a shallow layer of chamoy (or use lime juice, honey, or agave) onto a small plate. Spread Tajín or salt on a second plate. Moisten the edge of each glass with the chamoy or chosen sticky dip, then gently press the rim into the Tajín or salt until evenly coated. Set glasses aside.
-
In a cocktail shaker, add the watermelon cubes. Use a muddler to crush and macerate the fruit until it releases plenty of juice and the pieces are well broken down. This step builds the cocktail’s fresh watermelon flavor.
-
Add tequila blanco, triple sec (or Cointreau), fresh lime juice, and agave syrup to the shaker. Add a handful of ice, secure the lid, and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds to chill and combine the ingredients.
-
Strain the margarita into the prepared glasses over fresh ice. For a smoother, less pulpy drink, double-strain through a fine mesh sieve to catch seeds and larger pulp pieces. If you prefer a rustic, fruit-forward cocktail, pour without straining.
-
Garnish with a small watermelon wedge, a lime wheel, or a thin slice of jalapeño for heat. Serve immediately and enjoy. Cheers!
Notes
- Use chilled watermelon: Starting with cold fruit keeps the drink refreshing and reduces the need for extra ice, which can dilute flavor.
- Add a thin drizzle of chamoy inside the glass before pouring for a touch of sour-sweet spice that pairs beautifully with the watermelon.
- Balance sweetness: Watermelon varies in sugar content. Begin with the stated amount of agave, taste, and add more if you prefer a sweeter cocktail.
- Swap tequila for mezcal if you want a smoky character; a little mezcal can add depth without overpowering the fruit.
- Customize the rim: If you prefer a more classic presentation, use lime juice and coarse salt instead of chamoy and Tajín. Honey or agave work well as sticky bases too.
- To make a pitcher: Muddle watermelon in a large pitcher, add the spirits, lime juice, and sweetener, stir well, then add ice just before serving. This is an easy way to serve several guests.
- For a lighter version, reduce the tequila slightly and increase the watermelon for a more fruit-forward mocktail-style drink—omit the alcohol entirely and enjoy a watermelon-lime refresher.
This watermelon margarita is designed to be flexible: adjust citrus, sweetness, and rim flavor to match the occasion. The fresh fruit keeps the drink lively and seasonal, making it a standout choice for backyard gatherings, poolside afternoons, or any time you want a bright, summery cocktail.
