What is in this frozen mojito recipe?

These frozen mojitos rely on the classic components of a mojito, blended with ice to create a smooth, bright slush. The core ingredients are simple and easy to find. Here’s what you need:

  • Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice gives the drink its bright, acidic backbone. Plan on about 2–3 limes to yield roughly 2 ounces (1/4 cup).
  • Rum: White rum is traditional and keeps the flavor light, but use the rum you prefer.
  • Simple Syrup: Adds sweetness to balance the lime. Honey simple syrup can be used for a slightly richer flavor, or use regular simple syrup.
  • Mint: Fresh mint leaves are essential—the aroma and flavor are what define a mojito and create the drink’s vivid green color when blended.
  • Ice: Plenty of ice is required to achieve the slush texture.
  • Sparkling Water: Added at the end for a touch of effervescence and lightness.

Substitutions and variations

Rum: White rum is classic for mojitos and keeps the drink clean and light, but light or aged rums both work depending on how pronounced you want the rum flavor to be.

Simple Syrup: Use regular simple syrup or a honey-based simple syrup for subtle floral or caramel notes. Adjust the sweetness to taste.

Sparkling Water: Plain sparkling water is ideal, or use a lime-flavored sparkling water for extra citrus lift.

Add frozen fruit

To transform the flavor profile and add color, add a cup of frozen fruit to the blender along with the other ingredients. Some good options:

  • Strawberries — for a sweet, bright twist.
  • Mango — delivers a tropical, creamy note.
  • Blueberries — mild and slightly sweet, pairs well with mint.
  • Coconut — use coconut water or frozen shredded coconut for a tropical vibe.

FAQ

Can you use mint extract instead of fresh mint?

Fresh mint is strongly recommended. Mint extract provides an artificial-tasting mint note and cannot replicate the vibrant aromatics, fresh flavor, and green color that fresh leaves provide. For the best texture and flavor, use fresh mint leaves.

How long should I blend these mojitos?

Blend on high for about 45–90 seconds, or until the mint is fully pulverized and the mixture is smooth and slush-like. If your blender struggles, blend in shorter bursts and pulse until the leaves are integrated and there are no large chunks.

Can I make these ahead of time?

Because the icy texture is best served immediately, make frozen mojitos right before serving. If needed, you can blend the base (rum, lime, syrup, and mint) and refrigerate briefly, then blend with ice just before serving.

How do I turn these into frozen treats?

Pour the blended mojito into popsicle molds or freezer-safe containers and freeze until firm for boozy popsicles. For parties with guests who prefer nonalcoholic options, reserve a small batch without rum and freeze that separately.

Storage

For best texture and flavor, serve frozen mojitos immediately after blending. If you must store leftovers, keep them in an airtight container in the freezer and allow to soften slightly before stirring and serving. Note that carbonation will dissipate, so top with sparkling water again when serving.

Turn them into popsicles!

To make frozen mojito popsicles, prepare the recipe as directed and pour into popsicle molds or freezer-safe tubes. Freeze until solid. For kid-friendly or sober options, omit the rum and use extra lime juice and a splash of club soda to brighten the flavor before freezing.

Prep: 15 mins | Cook: 0 mins | Total: 15 mins | Servings: 2

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. lime juice (about 1/4 cup, from 2–3 juicy limes)
  • 4 oz. white rum (1/2 cup)
  • 2 oz. simple syrup (1/4 cup)*
  • 12–15 medium fresh mint leaves
  • 2 cups ice, or more to reach desired slush texture
  • Sparkling water, for topping

Instructions

  1. Juice the limes until you have about 1/4 cup (2 oz.) of fresh lime juice. Pour the juice into a high-speed blender.
  2. Add the white rum, simple syrup, and fresh mint leaves to the blender.
  3. Add the ice. Start with 2 cups and add more if needed depending on how thick you like your slush.
  4. Blend on high for 45–90 seconds, or until the mint is fully pulverized and the mixture is smooth and slushy. Stop and scrape down the sides as needed.
  5. Taste and adjust: add a bit more simple syrup if you prefer sweeter, or an extra few mint leaves for a stronger mint flavor. Pulse to combine.
  6. Divide the blended mojito between two tall glasses. Top each glass with a splash of sparkling water to add effervescence.
  7. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and a lime wedge. Serve immediately.

Tips & Notes

  • Simple Syrup: Regular or honey simple syrup both work well—use the one that complements your personal taste.
  • Mint: Use fresh mint leaves and remove any thick stems. Gently wash and dry the leaves before blending.
  • Blender: A high-speed blender yields the smoothest texture. If your blender is less powerful, break the process into short pulses and stir between pulses.
  • Alcohol-free option: Omit the rum and increase lime juice and simple syrup or use a nonalcoholic rum alternative for a mocktail version.
